Densho Digital Archive.

This resource is part of Densho: The Japanese American Legacy Project. The Archive “holds over 400 visual histories (more than 800 hours of recorded video interviews) and over 10,700 historic photos, documents, and newspapers. The archive is growing as Densho continues to record life histories and collect images and records. These primary sources document the Japanese American experience from immigration in the early 1900s through redress in the 1980s with a strong focus on the World War II mass incarceration” (Densho). To access the database, a user can either create a free account or use the Guest account provided by Densho.

American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee provides online access to a large number of digitized photos and maps, including several thousands of items on China, Japan, Korea, and Tibet. The AGSL Digital Collections Portal serves as an integrated search engine to all of the AGSL digital collections.

Multicultural Canada.

Led by Lynn Copeland of Simon Fraser University and with the contributions of other Canadian institutions, the Multicultural Canada project digitizes cultural records of Canada’s multicultural communities and makes them freely available online. It includes an extensive list of collections, including newspapers in Chinese and Korean and the BC (British Columbia) multicultural photograph collection. In addition, it also provides access to the online version of the Encyclopedia of Canada’s Peoples (originally published by The Multicultural History Society of Ontario), which is an overview of all the ethnic groups in Canada.

1. 7,532 images of oracle bones;

4. 678 images of New Year paintings;
5. about 5000 images of Tangut (Western Xia) documents;
6. Cataloging records of 1202 publications on Tangut Kingdom (Western Xia);
7. 3080 images of old photos.

Kankoku Minzokubunka Gazou Detabesu 韓国民俗文化画像データベース.

Led by Hiroshi Honda of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, this project catalogs and digitizes photos taken by Japanese anthropologist Abito Ito in South Korea in 1970s. Ito himself has written many books on Korea. The photos total about 4,600 and a search interface is provided.

Provided by the Mainich Newspapers 毎日新聞社, this is the largest database of photos in Japan, with a total of 450 thousand photos from the Meiji era to today (120 thousand from the pre-WWII period). It allows free search, but reproduction rights and downloads are fee-based.
